Turn videos or photos of a person into 3D character animations for Blender and Unity without motion capture gear.

The gist

Motion2MixamoRig is an animation tool and Blender add-on that extracts body movement from standard video clips. It transfers that motion directly onto standard Adobe Mixamo 3D character models. It is designed for solo animators, indie game makers, and small creative studios looking to animate 3D characters without expensive motion-capture equipment.

What it does

  • Extracts full-body movement from a video clip of a single person
  • Converts single photo poses into matching 3D character stances
  • Applies captured movements onto Adobe Mixamo-rigged 3D characters
  • Exports ready-to-use 3D files in GLB format for Blender and Unity
  • Provides a one-click add-on interface inside Blender 4.2+

How it works

Architecture Diagram
Motion2MixamoRig Architecture Diagram

You provide a video of a person and a character model downloaded from Mixamo. The tool uses a 3D body model and vision AI to track joints and limb rotations across each video frame. It then retargets those movements onto the character's digital skeleton and saves an animated 3D model.

Best for

  • 3D animators and game creators using Blender or Unity
  • Small creative teams needing quick character animation without mocap hardware
  • Solo artists animating humanoid characters using free Adobe Mixamo rigs

Watch out for

  • The video or photo must show only one person, visible from head to toe with no cropping
  • Requires downloading a separate SMPL-X body model file after registering on their site
  • Downloads about 5 GB of model weights during the first run
  • Currently experimental software tested primarily on Apple Silicon Macs
